Bobcat and Bobolinks – May 21 and 28

Written May 31, 2025 By Stan DeOrsey

On May 21 we walked the Small-Burnham Conservation Area in Litchfield. With Ina’s
support 16 of us walked the portion closed to the public. And the birds were great. Even the weather cooperated, no rain, no wind, and some sun, but cool.

We had many warblers; Wilson’s and Blackpolls were particularly numerous at one point. We also saw two Green Herons. And we had two most beautiful male Scarlet Tanagers, seen well by most. One was in the public area and one in the private area. See Dana’s eBird checklist for details.

But perhaps the best “bird” was the Bobcat! Seen very well but briefly across the pond from where we were standing. Photograph courtesy of Bill Pelletier.

And on May 28, we had a near perfect walk, warm from the beginning but we won’t say
too hot, and it was dry. Twenty-six people attended, I think this is a new high for our walks. The walk was at Hallelujah Farm in Lisbon. A wonderful place, lots of fields, mowed trails, and birds. One of the hit birds had to be Bobolink, they were everywhere and constantly calling. Also Baltimore Orioles. Then we also saw, and heard, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Scarlet Tanager. We hit 50 birds again.

We certainly thank the owners of this private farm for allowing us to come. See the full checklist at https://ebird.org/checklist/S243898486.
