Camp Gustin, June 11

Written June 13, 2025 By Stan DeOrsey

Another great walk this morning at Camp Gustin in Sabattus. A former Boy Scout camp, now owned by the Androscoggin Land Trust along with adjacent Curtis Bog. Twenty people came and the weather was near perfect. Migration is long past but many birds were calling and nesting. The highlights were an adult (mother?) Ruffed Grouse with at least three young ones. They were difficult to see but the adult flew right in front of us twice and the young were in the leaf litter and blended in very well. We also watched a Blackburnian Warbler very well moving around high in a tree. We were serenaded by Wood Thrushes, Hermit Thrushes, and Veeries. The full list of 41 species is at https://ebird.org/checklist/S249299455.

A special thanks to Amy and Dana from the Land Trust in showing us around.
