What a great day, except for the wind. But in the woods the wind was hardly noticeable. Nine people turned out for a walk at Brunswick Landing, the former Naval Air Station. We started by looking for Meadowlarks and found 4 or more but none showed off well, though all sang. Then we checked for Upland Sandpiper and found none. So we walked a loop via the old picnic area and had a great time. We had 27 birds plus a snapping turtle we thought might be wanting to lay eggs. Here is the list of seen and heard (H):
Wild Turkey – one in a field, at first we thought with young or on a nest but apparently not.
Double-creasted Cormorant – one flew over
Great Blue Heron – seen twice, same bird?
Osprey – at least 4, all called as flying
Broad-winged Hawk – great view, carrying a rodent
Red-tailed Hawk – 2
Mourning Dove
Belted Kingfisher – 1
Eastern Phoebe
Red-eyed Vireo (H)
American Crow
Black-capped Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse (H)
Hermit Thrush – (H), one sang a lot
American Robin
European Starling
Northern Parula – one sang and sang, saw but never for long
Black-throated Green Warbler (H)
Pine Warbler (H)
Ovenbird (H)
Chipping Sparrow – 30++
Savannah Sparrow
Song Sparrow (H)
Bobolink – one briefly
Eastern Meadowlark – 4+?
Brown-headed Cowbird (H)
American Goldfinch
